We do not understand how cognitive processes lead to emergent properties of seeing and thinking. There are many models that scientists use to try to research how our brains work but the complexity is overwhelming and we are nowhere near fully understanding how the stuff of brains, neurons, glia and the vascular system leads to our exprience of the world around us.

Neural network models are interesting as they may be closer to representing how the brain works but understanding how well these models represent the emergent properties of cognitive function is not easy to measure.
